A portfolio review is a professional evaluation of your artwork and your online presence. The portfolio review is an initial measurement to find out where you are currently in your creative development. The conversation about the body of your portfolio is aimed at helping you with positive input to present yourself as optimally as possible.
Specific advice during the interview / review conversation
Based on your submitted digital works, you will receive specific advice on how you can improve your portfolio. The review conversation is tailored to your individual situation, influenced by our current situation, your ambition and the chosen major. In a conversation, the plus points of your portfolio will be highlighted and how you can possibly further develop them. Also the parts of your portfolio that need extra attention will also be discussed.
Preparation
For a balanced portfolio, it is important to make the right choice from your entire bandwidth of your creative works. Collect as much work as possible that you have made by yourself, even if you do not initially attempt to include it in your portfolio. Think, for example, of creative hobbies, sculpted figures, making fashion items, jewelry, poems, music, greeting cards or collecting unusual items - anything with a connection of your creativity. Within the conversation about your work it will become clear whether it is relevant to add certain works to your portfolio, for example, to emphasise your individuality.
Optimal presentation
A portfolio interview will give you insight into how the assessors will view your work. You can use this knowledge when compiling and finetuning your portfolio. This will allow you to prepare an optimal presentation with the work you have already created (and work you are yet to create) - resulting in a portfolio that will convince the assessors that you are the right candidate for the chosen education program.
Physical or digital?
Many art academies and design programmes now allow you to apply for admissions with a physical portfolio. However, there is usually also the option of submitting the portfolio digitally, if it is not possible to be present in person during the admissions - think, for example, of students abroad. Some programmes offer the option of submitting a digital portfolio only (remote admission).
It is useful to find out in advance how the admissions process works for the various programmes you have in mind. Are you expected to be physically present, or do you have a remote admission?
The advantages of a digital portfolio - Take control of your presentation
My advice is to create a digital portfolio in addition to a portfolio with physical work. This has the following advantages:
>>> You determine the order and the works that can be seen.
>>> You can show your portfolio in different places at the same time. It is set up - ready to send - and gives a good impression of all the qualities that you have.
>>> You can arrange images in such a way that they reinforce each other.
>>> In addition to the images, you can provide relevant descriptions - for example for projects. With (short) texts you can supplement projects or experiments that do not have clear visual images.
>>> You can include an overview of your (online) sources of inspiration.
>>> You can visualize your entire work process (from idea, sketches, research to final result) - which is less easy to realize with a physical portfolio.
>>> You can easily and clearly include different media in your portfolio - think of presentations of moving images and sound.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
The portfolio discussions can take place all day on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, also in the evenings if you do not have time during the day, or if you are in a different time zone. In the agenda (online booking system) on this site you can book an appointment on the day and time that suits you best.
The online portfolio review will take 20 minutes. Additional 5 minutes are reserved for the login procedure and to give you a warm welcome. In total, the conversation time is 25 minutes.
After you have purchased a portfolio review, you will receive instructions on how (and where) to send your digital files.
Please note that your portfolio and associated files must be available one week before the planned discussion. It is important that your work can be viewed well in advance so that the teacher can prepare. This is necessary to be able to advise you specifically during the discussion.
The software environment during the portfolio reviews is Microsoft Teams. You participate with a specific link that you receive in your email. Please note that you always use the same email address and that you only have access to Microsoft Teams with this address during the discussion. It is not necessary that you already have Microsoft Teams installed on your computer. A good internet connection is necessary.
If you are using a laptop or tablet, make sure you have sufficient battery capacity or a power connection.
If you need additional information about the portfolio review, please feel free to contact us with all your questions.
Students who decide to take a Preparatory Course and/or the Summer Course after a portfolio review will receive a 10% discount on the course fees.
Have a look for the dates of the upcoming portfolio reviews!
